If you're coming to Victoria for the first time you will definitely want to include a visit to world famous Butchart Gardens in your itinerary.
In 1904, Jennie Butchart began to beautify a worked-out quarry site left behind from her husband's pioneering efforts in the manufacture of portland cement. Fifty-five acres of wonderful floral display are open to the public, offering spectacular views from the many paths that meander through the four main gardens. The family's commitment to horticulture and hospitality spans 100 years, and continues to delight visitors from all over the world. From the exquisite Sunken Garden to the charming Rose Garden, the gracious traditions of the past are still maintained in one of the loveliest corners in the world.
We'll spend three hours with you, transporting you to the gardens and accompanying you on a tour. If necessary, you can choose to be pushed in one of the provided wheelchairs. Admission is included.
We will then take you to two very popular public gardens in the garden city of Victoria: Abkhazi Garden and Horticulural Centre of the Pacific.
The Abkhazi Garden is an exquisite heritage home and garden. Prince and Princess Abkhazi began creating their garden in 1946, the year they married and settled in Victoria, after living separate lives touched by both privilege and tragedy. They continued to improve the garden throughout their lives together. The garden is very discreet from the street, with only hints of what exists beyond the hornbeam hedge. What the visitor does find is a garden that embraces a natural landscape that is unique to Victoria.
Of the 103 acres of land that the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific manages, five acres are intensively cultivated.
The Gardens demonstrate landscaping techniques suitable for the Pacific West Coast. The Winter Garden has colourful flowers or berries in the winter, yet is beautiful year-round; a shaded stream runs through the Takata Garden; Eucalyptus and Mediterranean plants thrive in sunny areas.
This tour will require walking gentle slopes on firm paths. Each garden will take about one hour with a driving break between. Admissions included. Abkhazi is open March 1 to Sept. 30, daily from 11 - 5 pm.
